Kemijärvi

Kuusamo [ kɛmijærvi ] is a small town in Finnish Lapland (Finnish Lapin lääni ). It lies about 86 kilometers northeast of Rovaniemi.

The city, at the same L.Kemijärvi (Finnish järvi means "lake" ) and situated on the River Kemi, is the northernmost city in Finland. It extends over 3929.7 km ² of which 427.56 km ² water are. It has 8101 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012), of which about 60 percent live in the town center.

Kuusamo is a major industrial (mainly wood processing industry ) and tourist center ( ski resort Pyhä 50 km away ) and forms the starting point for hikes in the Northeast region Lapland. The most important tourist destination in the nearby area ( municipality of Rovaniemi ) is the 16 meter high waterfall Auttiköngäs, which is near a traditional wooden rafter square.

Transport

Kuusamo is good transport links with the European highway 63. Within the commercial airports are Rovaniemi ( RVN 85 kilometers ) and Kuusamo ( KAO 135 km distance ), which are mainly served by Finnair. EFKM is the identifier of the located near the city center sports airfield. There is a railway line across Kemi, Rovaniemi to Kuusamo. Daily runs an overnight train to Helsinki and back. The train has modern sleeper. The station has a loading dock for car trains.

Economy

The L.Kemijärvi is used as a backwater basin of a water power plant of Kemi Oy. The pulp producing factory of the company Stora Enso was closed in April 2008.
