Ylitornio

Ylitornio [ ylitɔrniɔ ] (Swedish Övertorneå, North Sami Badje - Duortnus ) is a municipality in the Finnish part of Lapland.

Ylitornio is located north of the city of Tornio Tornio left of the river ( swedish Torne älv ), which is the border with Sweden. The Swedish municipality on the right bank of the river is called Övertorneå.

In addition to the main town Alkkula and the southern suburbs Armassaari, Kainuunkylä and Nuotioranta (all on the banks of Tornionjoki ) include some settlements in the hinterland to the community: Kaulinranta, Kuivakangas, Lohijärvi, Meltosjärvi, Närkki, Portimojärvi, Raanujärvi, Tengeliö and Kantomaanpää.

In the whole of Finland is known of the 242 m high mountain Aavasaksa, from whose summit you can look far into the picturesque countryside. Especially at the time of the midnight sun draws the mountain hordes of tourists. In the hinterland there are also several lakes, including the Miekojärvi, the iso- Vietonen and Raanujärvi. A total of approximately 183 km ² of the district Ylitornios be occupied by water.

As in many rural communities in northern Finland, the population of Ylitornio has greatly reduced in recent years tithing. Of the former about 12,000 inhabitants today are only 4560 left. At the formerly strong milk production still reminds the cheese in the nearby suburb Nuotioranta.

Policy

As generally in the rural areas of northern Finland, the Centre Party is also in Ylitornio the strongest political force. In the local elections 2008, she received 56 % of the vote and has the local council, the highest decision-making authority in local affairs, with 16 of 27 seats on an absolute majority. The second strongest force is the Left Alliance, which is as generally disproportionately represented in Lapland. It could unite 26.3% of the vote and seven seats are held by the local council. The Social Democrats and the National Coalition Party play, although the country belonging to the three major parties in Kolari with single-digit election results, and two or three deputies in the municipal council a subordinate role.
