Keteleeria

Young plant of Ordinary Sichuan holly fir ( Keteleeria davidiana )

Keteleeria or holly fir is a plant genus in the family (Pinaceae ). It includes three species that are native to Asia.

Description

Vegetative characteristics

Keteleeria species are evergreen trees that can reach heights of growth of up to 35 meters. The branches are of different lengths. On the branches small, round leaf scars are visible.

The leaves are spirally and usually more or less comb- shaped or sometimes almost star-shaped spread on branch arranged. The needle-like leaves are flat, lanceolate to oblong, 1.5 to 7 cm long and 2-4 mm wide. The stomata are usually located only in two rows on the underside of leaves, sometimes there are those on the upper leaf surface. There are two resin canals present.

The Keimplanzen have two to four cotyledons ( cotyledons ).

Generative features

The Keteleeria species are monoecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ). A special feature of the genera Keteleeria, Pseudolarix and Nothotsuga is that the male cones are close together several and develop from a bud. The female cones are upright terminal, are cylindrical or conical - cylindrical and are 6-22 cm long. From pollination to maturity the female cones need six to eight months. The cones fall off as a whole or the cone scales detach from the spindle and fall off one by one. The shape of the cones and the cone scales is very different in the three species. The bracts are half to three fifths as long as the seed scales.

The winged seeds are triangular -oblong and 8 to 16 mm.

The chromosome number is 2n = 24

Dissemination

The deposits are confined to Asia. The main areas located in China in the provinces of southern Gansu and southern Shaanxi, eastern Sichuan, Yunnan, southwestern Hubei, Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan, Guangdong ( with Hong Kong and Hainan Island ), southwestern Jiangxi, Fujian and Zhejiang. There are also deposits in Taiwan, as well as isolated populations in the mountains of northern Laos and southern Vietnam.

System

The genus Keteleeria in 1866 first described by Élie -Abel Carrière in Revue Horticole, 37, p 449. Type species is Keteleeria fortunei ( A.Murray to) Carrière. The genus name honors the Keteleeria Belgian gardener Jean -Baptiste Keteleer ( 1813-1903 ). A synonym for Keteleeria Carrière is Abietia AHKent.

The genus includes three species:

  • Ordinary Sichuan holly fir ( Keteleeria davidiana ( Bertrand ) Beissn. ), Origin: Western China
  • Keteleeria evelyniana mast, home. , China, Laos, Vietnam
  • Hong Kong holly fir ( Keteleeria fortunei ( A.Murray to) Carrière ), home: Southeast China

Depending on the author 3 to 14 species are mentioned. However, most species are often considered only as varieties of the above listed three ways. In the Flora of China even the two types Keteleeria hainanensis Chun & Tsiang and Keteleeria pubescens WCCheng & LKFu are listed.
