Khani, Sakha Republic

Chani ( Yakut and Russian Хани ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia) in Russia with 764 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The village is located about 800 km as the crow southwest of the capital of Republic of Yakutsk on the southeast flank of the Udokangebirges, a part of the Stanowoihochlandes. It is located on the left bank of the same name Oljokma Creek Chani, which marks the boundary where the Amur Oblast. About 5 km to the west is the boundary to the region Transbaikalia.

Chani belongs to Rajon Nerjungrinski and is located just 300 km west of its administrative center Nerjungri. The settlement is the seat and only town in the municipality ( gorodskoje posselenije ) Possjolok Chani.

History

The settlement was founded during the construction of the Baikal - Amur Mainline (BAM ) in the second half of the 1970s. Since 1981, Chani has the status of an urban-type settlement. After extensive completion of the railway end of the 1980s, and due to lack of further development since then left about two-thirds of the inhabitants of the place.

Traffic

Chani is located on the Baikal - Amur Mainline (BAM ) at kilometer 1864 from Taischet and on the mostly unpaved road that follows the railway line. Chani is the only major station of BAM mainline operated on the territory of the Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia) and the last station on the Dalnewostotschnaja schelesnaja doroga ( Far East Railway ) section; west section of the Wostotschno - Sibirskaja schelesnaja doroga begins ( East Siberian railway).
