Kimolos

The Greek Cycladic island of Kimolos (Greek Κίμωλος ( f sg ) ), together with Polyegos and several uninhabited islets, a municipality within the region South Aegean ( Περιφέρεια Νότιου Αιγαίου ).

Location

Kimolos is located in the southwestern Aegean Sea and is separated by a little more than a kilometer narrow strait of Pollonia ( στενό Πολύνι ) of the southwestern neighboring island of Milos. The distance to Sifnos is 12 km to the northeast. The coastline of Kimolos is very rugged, very near are numerous small islands and rocks. The largest scoring for community Kimolos island Polyegos is about 2 km east of the Strait of pyrgi ( στενό Πυργί ). The maximum length of nearly circular island is 8.5 km from southwest to northeast, the maximum width from northwest to southeast almost 7 km. The area is 37.426 km ². The highest elevation of the island forms the 397 m high Paleokastro.

Kimolos today

In the southwest lie the remains of an old, partially sunken ancient city on the island of Agios Andreas present.

Most inhabitants of the water scarce island still living from fishing and agriculture. 2007 was given high alert due to the lack of water. The island was supplied by surface ships.

Tourism has indeed taken on Kimolos foot, but is operated almost exclusively in the Greek domestic context. During the months of July and August there are accommodation shortages. A few years ago the pier for the large ferries from Piraeus has been enhanced so that the island can be quite reliable approached. The connection to Milos ( Apollonia ) with a small ferry drops at higher sea of often.

Settlements

The municipality has 910 inhabitants, who live almost exclusively in the village of Kimolos or Chorio. Not all of the smaller settlements are inhabited year-round.
