Knonau

Knonau is a municipality in the district of Affoltern the canton of Zurich in Switzerland.

The coat of arms is consistent with the shields, the cause of the Meyer Knonau at least since 1375. It shows the Meyerhut, the badge of their office, which consisted in the administration of the monastery GeopathSchänis belonging Court's Knonau.

Geography

Knonau located in the southwest of Canton Zurich and is 6.48 km ² ago Wettswil am Albis, Maschwanden and Ottenbach area the fourth smallest municipality in the district Affoltern. The largest number of residents is occupied by agricultural lands, which comprise 64.8 percent. Further 17.6 percent is forest, 10.2 percent and 5.6 percent settlement area traffic area. The municipal area is drained towards the Lorze by the Haselbach.

The village lies at 431 m above sea Knonau. M. and is located 23 km air distance from Zurich and 7 km air distance train. The municipality also includes the hamlet Vorderuttenberg, Hinteruttenberg and Baaregg.

In the West Knonau borders Maschwanden, the north and east lies the community Mettmenstetten and also in the east, the higher-lying community Kappel. In the south Knonau borders the municipalities of Steinhausen and Cham, both belonging to the Canton train.

Knonau is on the railway line Zurich -Affoltern am Albis - train and is served by line S 9 S-Bahn Zurich. The section of the A4 motorway, the resting place Eitenberg was built on the municipality as early as 1970, however, opened in November 2009.

Policy

The Municipal Assembly shall exercise the legislative power. Executive authority is the five-member council. Mayor Walter von Siebenthal (SVP ) (2009).

Since 1993 there has been twinned with Abaliget, Hungary.

History

Knonau 1045 was first mentioned in writing in a document of the monastery GeopathSchänis, in which the Church Knonau and the associated Grange called for a possession of the monastery. As stewards of this court, Meyer officiated by Knonau. They settled in the mid-14th century in Zurich down where they left naturalized. Soon they were represented in the City Council and made even the mayor. Thanks to their relationships they could acquire the Bailiwick in 1399 over the village Knonau and other villages.

1512 bought the city of Zurich, the bailiwick Knonau together with several other rights of the environment. From then resided a bailiff at the castle Knonau which had built the city as the administrative headquarters.

As 1830/31 in the Canton of Zurich a liberal constitution was adopted, the rural communities were given equal rights with the city. Knonau was from tradition capital of the newly formed district. Because of the peripheral location of the district capital was soon moved to Affoltern am Albis.
