Kökar
Kökar [ tɕø kar ː ] is a municipality in the autonomous Finnish province (Finnish: Lääni ) Åland. Kökar has 244 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012), of which about 95 percent of Swedish-speaking, and an area of 63.94 square kilometers, of which 0.39 square kilometers of inland waters. As in Åland is Swedish is the official language.
Community name
The community name appears for the first time in a text Danish sailors of the 13th century. At that time, the Franciscan monastery on Kökar probably already been in operation. The name was written as Thiyckækarl, which could refer to the thick islanders.
Traffic
Kökar can be reached by ferry Ålandstrafiken that (on Korpo ) to Långnäs runs from Galtby (on Lumparland ).
Attractions
- St. Anne's Church was built on the site of the Franciscan monastery in 1784. In connection with the church there is a museum.
- Otterböte is a Bronze Age settlement that was built around 1150-1050 BC. It was discovered in 1918.
- Källskär is a small island and famous landmark south of Kökar.
Towns
To the municipality includes the villages Finnö, Hellsö, Karlby ( Charles Village ), Kyrkogårdsö, Österbygge and Överboda.
