The Köln South Station in the southwestern edge of the city center of Cologne in Neustadt -Süd area between the Luxembourg and the Zuelpicher road. The station is mass transit system stop at the left Rhine route, here branches off the goods shunting path from the south bridge, which is used as needed by passenger trains. The station has four platform tracks at two central platforms and two Platform loose tracks that are used for intensive freight traffic.

History

The left Rhine line (originally Bonn- Cölner Railway ) was at its opening in 1844 radially straight to Cologne and ended at what was then the outskirts at the station " Cologne -Pantaleon ". With the opening of Central Station in 1859 a new line was put into operation, which branched off to the west of the existing line and on the inside of the interior fortress belt led around the city to Central Station. With the beginning of the 1889 reconstruction of the Central train station and the access routes have been rebuilt and raised by several meters. Because now was the route by the growth of Cologne in the middle of the city, the stations Köln Süd were ( spelling to 1914: Cologne South) in the course of the renovation opened and Cologne West, 1891.

The first expansion came in 1896 when the freight line for freight station Cologne Bonntor and two years later was taken to the new Rheinauhafen in operation. A further extension in 1910 brought the opening of the bypass freight train on the South Bridge in Cologne with them: In parallel to the existing line were built two more, the freight reserved tracks. The freight line begins in Cologne West via Cologne and the Cologne Eifeltor South Station to Hürth -Kalscheuren. In Cologne, the Southern route via Cologne Bonntor branches off to the south bridge, another connection leads south of Cologne south of Eifeltor directly Bonntor on the bridge.

Current usage

In addition to commuters from the south to Cologne train station by commuters to Bonn and students from the nearby University of Cologne is used intensively, so that the station is busy most of the day. The problem is the connection of the station to the rail network: At the northwest end of a flight of stairs from platform 3/4 to stop Dasselstraße / Bf south of the line leads 9 The platform 1/2 but has no direct access from the west, and from this direction only the platform 3/4 and the eastern underpass accessible, which leads to very long paths. At the southeastern end of the Vorgebirgsbahn passes (line 18 ) at the station output, but the nearest stop Eifelwall is about 250 meters away. In 350 meters away is the public transport hub Barbarossa place.

The tracks 1 and 4 are used for traffic to and from Cologne and Bonn Hbf, the intervening tracks 2 and 3 are used mainly for long-distance passenger transport (without stop) on the left Rhine route, and on operational tours. Furthermore, they are available to the public transport as sidings available.

The Platform loose track 5 north of the platforms takes on the freight both Cologne Eifeltor and direction south bridge, the track 6 ( with the completed and currently unused wooden platform) the freight train - rides the opposite direction. Since the platform is usually used 3/4 only of incoming passengers and from the few passengers Köln Hbf, it is equipped only with a simple Concourse, while the platform is 1/2 covered about one-third. Destination displays are installed on the tracks 1 and 4, of which planned exit all trains. On both platforms also include vending machines for tickets, on the platform 1/2 an additional machine for cold drinks and sweets.

Problem areas

The tracks 1 and 2 can be reached directly only through the exit at the reception building ( Luxemburger Straße ). Those coming the tracks 1 and 2, of the Zuelpicher road to the goal, the entire length of the platform of the tracks 3 and 4 to pace until the ramp Luxemburger Straße and walk through the underpass to get to the other platform. One reason for many passengers, again and again to take the forbidden and dangerous short cut across the tracks to change the platforms. As of 2010, a staircase should be built for 1.6 million euros, which would also allow the Zuelpicher road with direct access to the tracks 1 and 2, currently (as of December 2013) has not begun construction.

Also, is not accessible to the entire station.
