Kong Christian stod ved højen mast

Kong Christian stod ved Højen mast is the royal anthem of Denmark. The original melody is from Ditlev Ludvig Rogert, the text by Johannes Ewald ( in 1779 ). Today's standard, revised version of the melody is by Friedrich Kuhlau, which they used among others in the overture of his incidental music to the drama " Elverhøj " (1828 ). A known process the melody written by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 1866 on the occasion of the wedding of Tsarevich Alexander and Princess Dagmar of Denmark, the Danish Overture in D major, Op 15 composed, which is also known under the title Festival Overture on the Danish National Anthem.

The verses of the text are related to different historical events and personalities:

Use of Danish hymns

In the Kingdom of Denmark, two official national anthems are used: the royal anthem Kong Christian ( King Christian ) and the so-called national anthem The He et yndigt country (There is a lovely country).

  • The royal anthem is played at official events where members of the Danish royal family or the Danish Government are present or where the Head of State of the host country or members of the host government to participate. Even with fleet visits and military sports events, the royal anthem is played.
  • If other civil occasions, such as Sporting events, exchange visits, inter alia, the national anthem is played.
