Geography

Koniecpol is located in the hill country between Czestochowa and Krakow at the Pilicą. 74 km northeast of Katowice and 40 km east of Częstochowa Voivodeship to the Woiwodschaftsgrenze to Holy Cross.

Koniecpol borders the municipalities of: Żytno, Dąbrowa Zielona, Przyrów, Lelów, Szczekociny and Secemin.

The municipality has an areal extent of 146.75 km ² of which 58% are used for agriculture and 24% is covered by forest.

Education

The municipality has two kindergartens, five elementary schools, two middle schools and two vocational schools. There are in the town of further central library and four school libraries.

History

To 1938

The German city was chartered Koniecpol on December 29, 1443 by the Polish king Władysław Warneńczyk. An economic boom was recorded in the 16th century. In 1559 the city was granted by King Sigismund II Augustus, the right to bridge tolls and market rights. In the 17th century the city was destroyed several times by wars and fires. In the 18th century Koniecpol lost its economic importance. 1815, the city was part of Congress Poland. 1827 was begun to build a steel plant in the city. During the January Uprising in 1863 against Russian rule there were several battle near the city. In 1870 the city was the municipal law, as a punitive action, but known by the Tsar. Economic development was positively affected by the opening of the railway of Czestochowa to Kielce 1903. 1927 Koniecpol was awarded again the municipal law.

1939 to today

September 3, 1939 Koniecpol was occupied by the German Wehrmacht. In December 1939 1.000 people from Posen and Wrześni were brought into the city. As of October 1942, the Jews were begun to bring in the concentration camps. The population of Koniecpol consequently decreased by 30%. January 15, 1945 Koniecpol was occupied by the Red Army.

1953 Fibreboard plant was put into operation. Expanded in the years 1957 and 1960.

In the years 1975-1998 the town was part of the Voivodeship Częstochowa.

Economy and Transport

By Koniecpol the voivodship road runs 786 of Czestochowa to Kielce and here the Province Road 794 begins to Krakow. In addition, the line of Czestochowa to Kielce runs through the city.
