Korňa

Korňa (Hungarian Kornyavölgy ) is a municipality in Okres Čadca in northern Slovakia.

Geography

Korňa located in the small valley of the brook Korňianka in Turzovská Highlands (part of the Beskydy ) and is accessible by a branch from the road 484. The center is located 6 km north- northwest of the city Turzovka, belonged to the Korňa until 1954. Administratively, there is the church today from the three districts Korňa I, II and III, with a total of 36 small settlements.

History

The municipality was created in 1954 by merging the scattered settlements Nižná Korňa and Vyšná Korňa that administratively the city Turzovka were subordinated by then. The inhabitants of the settlements were mainly engaged in wood processing, in particular, they were known for the production of wooden roof shingles and spinning wheels. Due to the poor living conditions left 1920-1940 many of the male inhabitants Korňa to find work abroad, after the end of World War II, however, the number of inhabitants remained fairly constant ( 1950 to 2412 inhabitants, from 2001 to 2266 inhabitants).

Attractions

Attractions include two churches - both a wooden from 1944 and was constructed in 1994 modern church. Furthermore, located in the municipality a small pilgrimage town on the mountain Živčáková.

As a special attraction applies to aboveground oil well at the bottom of the community. An exploitation of oil, however, is not planned for the foreseeable future.
