Kostroma (cattle)

The Kostroma cattle ( Russian Kостромская порода крупного рогатого скота transcribed Kostromskaya poroda kruplowo rogatowo Skota ) is a breed of cattle from Russia and Belarus. It is a dual-purpose breed.

Occurrence

The Kostroma cattle are kept mainly in the oblasts of Ivanovo and Vladimir in Russia and Vitebsk and Mogilev in Belarus. She also occur in Tatarstan and Mari El.

History

Beginning of the breeding end of the 19th century in the Kostroma Oblast in the Federal District Central Federal District in Russia. Land for breeding formed the local landraces Miskow beef and Babajew beef. The races Yaroslavl, Kholmogory and Ayrshire were bred in the Miskow cattle. In the Babajew Cattle Brown Swiss was crossed. From 1912 Brown Swiss bulls were often crossed with Babajew cows. 1920 a large number Babajew and Swiss Brown cattle in the state operating Karawajewo was held in the Kostroma Oblast, where they have been since 1932 intercrossed. 1934, Kostroma - breeding station was established. 1944, the breed was officially recognized.

In 1980, there were 838 100 animals. There are seven breeding lines.
