Special Administrative Region

Kowloon (Chinese九龙/九龙, Jiǔlóng Pinyin, Cantonese gau2 lung4, Nine Dragons ' ) is the largest part of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, located in the southern part of the north of Hong Kong Iceland peninsula of Kowloon Peninsula. Its population is 2,021,669 (as of 1 January 2005). Kowloon is not to be confused with the related District Kowloon City and Kowloon City District.

The name " Kowloon "

The name comes from Kowloon's last emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty, who was on the run in the area of present-day Hong Kong. On a mountain standing he said, according to legend, to his companions: "I see eight dragons. " And that meant the eight mountains of Hong Kong. One of his remaining mandarin said: "I see nine dragons. " The ninth was the Emperor, who stood before him, because the dragon in Chinese culture is a symbol of the emperor.

The dragon is the only animal of the Chinese Astrology that is to be regarded as mythical creatures, it is made up of nine animals. The number nine is according to Chinese numerology, the number of the emperor. " Nine Dragons " that is to say in Chinese " jiulong " (abbreviation :九龙, in Cantonese " gáuhlùhng ", long sign:九龙). Hence the name " Kowloon ".

Geography

Kowloon is bordered to the east by the Lei Yue Mun Passage, Mei Foo Sun on the west by Chuen and Stonecutters Iceland, on the north by Tate's Cairn and Lion Rock, and on the south by Victoria Harbour. Commercial center of the district is the central Nathan Road. The metro line Tsuen Wan Line runs right through Kowloon.

The promenade around the " Kowloon Public Pier ", the " Space Museum " and the "Space Theatre" is popular with tourists because of the nightly light show on the skyscrapers of Hong Kong skyline Iceland in the far south of Salisbury Road.

Important road is the East Kowloon Corridor.

  • Yau Tsim Mong

Policy

Kowloon is divided into two constituencies for the " Legislative Council of Hong Kong ":

  • Kowloon East including Wong Tai Sin and Kwun Tong
  • West Kowloon Yau Tsim Mong including, Sham Shui Po and Kowloon City

History

In Kowloon was until 1992 the Kowloon Walled City, a Chinese enclave, which had been transformed over the years from a military fort in a slum. The former Kai Tak International Airport International Airport stood in Kowloon.
