Location and climbing opportunities

It is located in the westernmost part of the Bavarian Prealps in Estergebirge near Garmisch -Partenkirchen. Removed directly below and half an hour from the summit is the Weilheim hut (1955 m ), the highest mountain hut of the Bavarian Alps.

The following ascent options:

  • From Oberau the rather steep leading over narrow mountain trails Oberauer trail leads through the Frick ground and later on also over 2000 meters high, but less well-known bishop over. About 4 hours are to be estimated for this climb.
  • From Klais another way on the Krüner Alm leads (1620 m) and the Michel field
  • From Garmisch -Partenkirchen or Farchant one can reach through the Esterbergalm in about 4 ½ hours to the summit of Krottenkopfs.
  • Plus, there's the slightly longer rise from Eschenlohe at the 1,922 m high Hohe boxes over the top.

Name declaration

Like many other mountain name is not clear the origin of the name Krottenkopfs. One possibility is that the name derives from the name Krott, a Other states that the mountain toads ( called in dialect Krotten ) to have lived below the mountain, the mountain gave the name. According to a third theory, the name comes from the ancient words Grott, Grutt or Krutt that mean about rubble or rocky terrain.
