KUCI is an American radio station in Irvine, California, which is operated by the University of California and on the FM frequency 88.9 MHz can be received.

History

Craig Will, a graduate student in art was the one who in 1968 KUCI mentally for the first time brought to life, and later handed over the transmission line to Earl Arbuckle, who a little later Kučiš first chief engineer was. In October 1969, the station was the first time a broadcast license on a trial basis, by the FCC ( Federal Communications Commission ) issued and went with the song " Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies for the first time on the air. On November 25, 1969 KUCI was granted its official broadcasting license to transmit at 10 watts on 89.9 FM.

In 1972, KUCI offered his first newscast, while in 1974 mustered the transmitter with a 24-hour program. From 1978, many notable artists were invited to interviews. These included Jackson Browne, Ray Bradbury, Howard Baker, Cesar Chavez, Blue Oyster Cult, The Beach Boys and the Monty Python's Flying Circus group. In the spring of 1979, mentioned an article in Billboard magazine that KUCI jazz music will radiate as a main program.

In August 1981, succeeded KUCI to get out of a threatening situation that you can transmit concerned. Since the local radio station KCRW with the FCC a stronger radiation power applied, and this was approved KCRW, this has meant for KUCI that their mission radius was limited and was therefore no longer be received from now on in remote parts of the school campus. Through the intervention of the then transmit Director Sue Simone, KUCI got through this performance problem to send the approval from the FCC, on a new frequency. KUCI was on 20 August 1981 moved from 89.9 MHz to 88.9 MHz at which it sends to the present.

In 1984 moved to new problems for the radio station. The Radio Manager Josh Bleier announced that KXLU, another college radio station of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles with the same transmission frequency, plan its transmission tower at a higher position to relocate, so as to increase their own transmission radius. This meant that Kučiš transmitted signal is thus practically wiped out, would and would be as good as ever no longer be received. This was the necessary evidence for the need to increase the transmission power of KUCI to "A - class ", or in other words, a permit to request from 10 watts to 100 watts of transmit power with the relevant office.

The fall of 1986 marked the beginning of attempts to raise money to replace Kučiš slowly " dying " transmitter. With the news that the risk that KUCI in unsuccessful fundraising attempts, absolutely must set the transmission mode of the high school radio. For this purpose, organized KUCI including in and around Los Angeles two concerts to fund by winning the revenue the new transmitter ( 7000 USD ). After months of efforts of the staff they managed the goal and earned the much needed new solid state transmitter.

In September 1991, the FCC granted with the consent of KUCI that the transmitter 's output power from 100 to 200 watts, this should once in stereo, increase. As of March 15, 1993 KUCI reached a previously unprecedented transmission radius in Orange County. Among other things, KUCI receivable was even in Mission Viejo and Westminster.

KUCI, known as a trendsetter, 1996 was within one of the first radio stations over the Internet.
