Kunar Province

Kunar ( Konar also, Pashtun کونړ ) is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, located in the northeastern part of Afghanistan.

Etymology

The word comes Kunar in historical texts as Kunar ( کونړ ) Kanir ( کنیر ) Kahwis ( کهویس ) and Kolo ( کولو ) before and Nuristani languages ​​means " Valley of the Olives". There used in Kunar many olive trees, even today, olive trees are planted.

Geography

Kunar has an area of about 4942 square kilometers and about 417,000 inhabitants. The province is located in the densely wooded Hindu Kush Mountains.

With Kunar neighboring Afghan provinces of Nuristan in the north- west, Laghman are in the west and Nangarhar to the south.

In the east, the Kunar borders Pakistan, namely southeast to the Mohmand and Bajaur Agencies of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan and north-east to the districts Lower Dir and Chitral of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The border with Pakistan extends along the Durand line over 175 km.

Provincial capital Kunars is Asadabad.

Topography

The river Kunar (also Kunar Rud ) rises in northwestern Pakistan a glacier on the south side of the Hindu Kush and flows initially as Chitral south to Afghanistan. On the Afghan side of the border, it is then called Kunar. The river flows Kunar, near Jalalabad in the Kabul River.
