Kurri Kurri, New South Wales

Kurri Kurri is a small town in the Australian state of New South Wales.

Kurri kurri is a word of Awabakal language and means " first thing ", " beginning". Colloquially, the short form Kurri is used for the place.

Geography

Kurri Kurri is part of the local administrative area Cessnock City and is located in the lower portion of the Hunter Valley region, which is for viticulture in Australia significant. The place is mainly a residential area and has an industrial zone in the northwest on.

History

The geologist Edgeworth David discovered in 1886 with the South Maitland Coalfield a large coal deposit in the region. For the purpose of coal mining railway line was built and the town of Kurri Kurri created in 1902, the first land auction in 1903 took place.

As the center of the mining region Kurri Kurri grew to 1911 significantly. Mid-1920s, the peak of coal production was reached in the mid- 1960s was finally set.
