Kurt Sanderling

Kurt Sanderling ( born September 19, 1912 in Arys circuit Johannesburg, East Prussia, † 18 September 2011 in Berlin) was a German conductor.

Life

Sanderling worked in 1931 as a coach at the Städtische Oper in Berlin -Charlottenburg. After the electoral victory of the NSDAP in the Reichstag elections in March 1933 he was in 1933 working for the Jewish Cultural Association. Because he was expatriated in 1935, as a Jew, he had to emigrate in 1936 to his uncle to Moscow. Here he became a rehearsal pianist and later conductor of the Moscow Radio. He made his debut in 1937 with Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio. 1940 to 1942 he was chief conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Kharkov in Ukraine. After a stint with the Leningrad Philharmonic, he was second chief conductor of the orchestra Yevgeny Mravinsky below. He held that post from 1942 to 1960.

After returning to East Berlin Sanderling was from 1960 to 1977 the chief conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. At the same time he headed from 1964 to 1967 the Staatskapelle Dresden. From 1994 to 1998 he was a board member of the Berlin Schauspielhaus.

Sanderling was beside Günter Wand (1912-2002), the last direct descendant of the German romantic school, he had no lessons in conducting. The beating time can each learn in a few hours time, he do not need a study. The best school is still the practice, not the theory.

As a conductor Sanderling is dedicated to the works of Gustav Mahler, Johannes Brahms and Shostakovich, with whom he maintained a close friendship until his death in 1975. Also Sanderling was known as an interpreter of the works of Jean Sibelius. He also brought among others works by Günter Kochan premiered.

Most of Sanderling's family members are also musicians: his son Thomas Sanderling, from his first marriage with Nina Schey is conductor. Since 1963 Sanderling was married in second marriage with the double bass player Barbara Sanderling. His sons from this marriage are the conductor Stefan Sanderling and the cellist Michael Sanderling, which occurs also as a conductor for several years.

On died before his 99th birthday day, Kurt Sanderling was buried in the cemetery Pankow III.
