Thomas Sanderling

Thomas Sanderling ( born October 2, 1942 in Novosibirsk ) is a German conductor.

Life

Thomas Sanderling is the son of conductor Kurt Sanderling and his first wife Nina Schey. During his father's exile Thomas Sanderling was born in the Soviet Union and began his training with the study of the violin at the special school of the Leningrad Conservatory. From 1960 he studied at the Academy of Music " Hanns Eisler" Berlin. In 1962 he made ​​his debut as a conductor. This was followed by consultations with Hans Swarovsky and assistant to Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein.

Stages of his career were initially Sondershausen and Reichenbach im Vogtland, before he was in 1966 in Halle ( Saale) appointed Music Director, where he was an extensive concert and operatic repertoire developed. In 1978, he debuted at the Vienna State Opera, then at the Bavarian State Opera. It was followed by the reputation as a guest conductor at the German State Opera in Berlin.

He left in 1983 to settle in the Federal Republic of Germany. Between the years 1984 and 1986 he was artistic director of the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. In the course of his career, he conducted at many major opera houses, including Teatro La Fenice Venice, Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow, Mariinsky Theatre St. Petersburg, Nice Opera, German Opera Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera.

Thomas Sanderling worked regularly with major orchestras, including the Staatskapelle Dresden, the London Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, NDR Symphony Orchestra, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Russian National Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Symphony Orchestra and many more. International soloists with whom he has worked are, among others, David Oistrakh, Emil Gilels, Gidon Kremer, José van Dam, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Gundula Janowitz, Robert Holl, Andrej Hoteev, Rudolf Buchbinder, Natalia Gutman, Sergei Leiferkus, Anna Malikova, Paul Tortelier and Walter Berry. He is a regular guest conductor with the radio orchestras in Germany, principal guest conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra Novosibirsk and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Moscow. The Osaka Symphony Orchestra, with the Sanderling won the Grand Prize of the local critics twice awarded him the title of " honorary music director for life ."

A special friendship joined Thomas Sanderling with the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich and his family. After the composer was present at Sanderlings Moscow debut, Shostakovich entrusted the conductors to the German premieres its 13th and 14th Symphony as well as their German text translations. There followed the CD recording of the Michelangelo Suite. Sanderling's first recording of Shostakovich's songs cycles for orchestra in German Grammophon was presented in September 2006 in the British magazine The Gramophone in category "The Editor's Choice". In May 2013 Sanderling conducted the premiere of the last opera by the Russian composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg, The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky, at the National Theatre Mannheim. In October 2013, more Shostakovich premieres at the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and baritone Gerald Finley.

Artistic creation Thomas Sanderling is documented by numerous photographs, which have been awarded many times. He won for the recordings of the 6th Symphony of Gustav Mahler with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and all the symphonies of Alberic Magnard the Cannes Classical Award. His recording of the complete Brahms symphonies with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London for Brahms anniversary has worldwide recognition. The recording of the Piano Concerto by Paul Kletzki with Joseph Banowetz as the soloist brought him even a Grammy nomination.

Thomas Sanderling's half-brothers are also musicians: the conductor Stefan Sanderling and the cellist and conductor Michael Sanderling.
