Julius Rietz

August Wilhelm Julius Rietz ( born December 28, 1812 in Berlin, † September 12, 1877 in Dresden ) was a German conductor, teacher of composition and composer.

Life

Rietz was the son of a chamber musician Johann Friedrich Rietz ( born June 12, 1767 in Lubben (Spreewald), † December 25, 1828 in Berlin) was born. His older brother was Eduard Rietz. Julius Rietz settled at Moritz Ganz and Bernhard Heinrich Romberg trained as a cellist and studied composition with Carl Friedrich Zelter.

At the age of 16, he joined the orchestra of the Royal Municipal Theatre. Through the friendship of his brother Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Rietz learned about the famous composers know. Through the mediation of Mendelssohn, he came in 1834 as the second conductor at the theater to Dusseldorf. 1835 Rietz successor Mendelssohn 's first conductor and 1836 Urban Kapellmeister. Through its appeal to Leipzig Rietz was 1847-1854 theater conductor and took over the management of the Singing Academy Leipzig. In the years 1848-54 and 1856-60 Rietz was also conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and a teacher of composition at the Conservatory of Music and Drama. Here he worked again with Ferdinand David as Kapellmeister together, with whom he had played as a teenager in Berlin Königsstädtisches theater together. Rietz ' work is heavily influenced by Mendelssohn.

1860 Rietz was appointed Kapellmeister in Dresden and 1870, the artistic director of the Royal Conservatory of Music and Theatre in Dresden. 1859 Rietz was presented by representatives of the University of Leipzig doctorate ( Dr. phil. Hc ). Since 1874 Rietz was Royal Saxon music director. From 1874 to 1877 he headed the editorial board of the Breitkopf & Hartel 's complete edition of Mendelssohn's works. Rietz died in 1877 in Dresden and was buried at the local Trinity Cemetery.
