Kynuna

Kynuna is a place in the center of the Australian state of Queensland on the banks of the Diamantina River. The village is located on the Landsborough Highway in the Shire of McKinlay, a Local Government Area and is located 1521 km northwest of Brisbane and 303 km south-east of the regional center of Mount Isa. 2006 Kynuna had 95 inhabitants.

The place was built as a camp for horse-drawn carts to the nearby public Kynuna farm, at a place where five streets on the Diamantina River met. To town Kyuna in 1894 and was appointed shortly afterwards inhabited by 700 people and had three pubs.

According to a local legend, the shearer Samuel Hoffmeister committed suicide on the Combo Waterhole at Kynuna 1894 suicide. This inspired Banjo Paterson to the song " Waltzing Matilda". Paterson was engaged for a time with the daughter of a local farmer's market and visited the area.

Today, the town has a pub and a hotel.

South of Kynuna is the northernmost opal field in Australia.
