La Motte, Quebec

La Motte is a comune ( Municipalité ) in the Abitibi- Témiscamingue administrative region in the Canadian province of Québec.

As a native of La Motte Cardinal Marc Ouellet was in the 2013 conclave as papabile, had converted the basement of an old church to the media center because of the press onslaught.

Geography

The municipality is located in southwestern Quebec between cities Amos and Malartic, one of which in each case is about 30 km away.

The nearby route 117 can be achieved Val- d'Or and Rouyn -Noranda. The Route 109 leads in a north-south direction through the municipality. The eastern boundary of the territory forms the Rivière Harricana, which forms at the height of La Motte two lobes: the Lac Malartic southeast and the Lac La Motte northeast of the town.

The municipal area has a size of 214.40 km ² of which 176.76 km ² of land and 37.64 km ² water surface are. In 2011, the population was 457, representing an increase of 15.7% compared to 2006.

History

By the arrival of the railway in Amos in 1913, the area around La Motte could be well populated. The route led from Abitibi about Lac- aux- Sables, La Tuque and Senneterre in the city of Québec. The number of settlers in Nordwestquébec thus rose significantly.

La Motte is named after Guillaume- Jérôme Vacquier de Lamothe, a French officer who fought under Louis -Joseph de Montcalm.
