Lac de Gérardmer

The Lac de Gerardmer is a cold clear mountain on the side of the Vosges in Lorraine, the Vosges. It is the largest natural lake in the Vosges and Lorraine. On the eastern shore of Lake Gerardmer, the city after which the lake is named. Its drainage is via a short watercourse called Jamagne in the Vologne, a tributary of the Moselle River. In the lake there are some rare fish and plant species such as burbot or Brachsenkräuter.

Formation

At the time of the Ice Age, ( 80000-10000 ago) caused by the glaciation of the Vosges mountains to the west of the main ridge of the three lakes

  • Lac de Gerardmer, which was dammed by a terminal moraine
  • Longemer that fills the former basin of a glacier
  • Lac de Retournemer, incurred by a glacier cirque lake

Leisure and Tourism

The lake is used for bathing; June to September there is a plan on the beaches. Also for sailing and windsurfing, the lake offers good conditions. From April to October lake cruises are offered with excursion boats. Boat Rentals offer pedalos and rowing boats and electric boats to go across the lake.

Around the lake is a circular route of over 6 km in length. At the lake there are several swimming holes, camping sites and hotels. By the lake of Gerardmer much cultural life of the city takes from: find a cinema, the city park, the swimming pool and much more.

In midsummer festival is celebrated with fireworks on the lake, on which many wire sculptures are adorned with flowers. On Bastille Day traditionally takes place fireworks on the lake shore at 22:30 clock.
