Lake Chemong

The Lake Chemong or Chemong Lake is a lake in the Canadian province of Ontario.

It lies 8 km north- west of Peterborough, near the town of Bridgenorth. Communities on and near the lake are Bridgenorth and Selwyn in the east and Ennismore Township on the west. The James A. Giffort dam crosses the lake and connects Bridgenorth and Ennismore by road.

The lake is 14 km long and 1 km wide. The Lake Chemong together with the Buckhorn Lake and Pigeon Lake a three- lake system, which is part of the Kawartha Lakes. The Lake Chemong is connected via the 200 m wide Harrington Narrows with the adjacent Buckhorn Lake.

The Trent -Severn Waterway, a canal connecting the Georgian Bay with Lake Ontario, through the Buckhorn Lake. The Lake Chemong offers itself as to when driving on this waterway as a detour. On the lake there are several small islands, including Big Iceland, which translates to " Big Island " means.

On the shore of the lake there are many cottages and campsites. On the lake many fishing tournaments are held, the most common fish are smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and muskellunge.

Although the lake is generally Chemong is, the official orthography Chemung is due to a request from an Indian community. " Chemong " means " mud", which is due to the former swamp areas in the vicinity of the lake. These were flooded during the impoundment of waters within the Trent -Severn Waterway.
