Lake St. Joseph

BW

Lake St. Joseph is a lake on the border of the two districts of Thunder Bay and Kenora in the Canadian province of Ontario.

The original 364 km ² lake was dammed by the construction of the Council Rapids Dam and the Cedars Channel Dams in 1936. The water area is now 459 km ², the total area including islands is 493 km ². Due to the fluctuations in water level in the dammed lake, the water surface can vary greatly. In addition, at the western end of the Root River Dam ( Lake St. Joseph Diversion Dam ) was constructed, which makes it possible to divert water to the south-west to Lac Seul.

The River Albany River forms the outlet of the lake at its eastern end to the adjacent Osnaburgh Lake. Important tributary of Lake St. Joseph is the Cat River. This drains a lake system located north west and flows with two arms of the river on the north western shore of the lake.

The lake is accessible by Ignace over the Ontario Highway 599. The road on the eastern shore of the lake over the 35 km northeast of the lake situated place Pickle Lake.

In Lake St. Joseph following fish species are caught: Walleye, Canadian walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge, perch, American, American char, Heringsmaräne and Lake Sturgeon.
