Former Liman

The Jalpuhsee ( rarely also Jalpuchsee; Ukrainian Ялпуг / Jalpuh or Ялпух / Jalpuch ), with an area of 149 km ², the largest natural lake in the Ukraine near the border with Moldova and Romania.

The freshwater lake is located in the Budschak in the southeast of Odessa in the Rajonen Bolhard, Izmail and Reni 15km west of the city of Izmail.

The lake lies in an elongated basin has a length of 39 km. Its width is about 7 km, the average depth is about 2 m and the maximum depth is 5.5 m. The water temperature in summer is 24-25 ° C, in winter freezes the lake and forms an unstable ice.

Bank settlements

On the north shore of the lake, the city is Bolhrad. On the east bank are the villages Oxamytne, Topolyne, Krynytschne, Kossa, Oserne and Nowa Nekrassiwka. On the west bank are the villages: Wynohradiwka, Wladytschen, Kotlowyna, Plawni and, at a short distance to the lake, the village Nowosilske.

Inflows and outflows

The Jalpuhsee has two inflows. Firstly, the in Bolhrad leading into the lake, 114 km long Jalpuch who gave the lake its name, and for the northeast- flowing, 21 km long Karassulak ( Карасулак ). [Note 1]

The tributaries of the lake have put together a catchment area of 4300 km ². This is located almost exclusively in the South of Moldova. Since there the wastewater is inadequately, the lake often exceed the permissible limits of pollution.

About the neighboring south and 82 km ² Kuhurluj Lake of Jalpuchsee drains into the lower Danube. In the 1970s, the two lakes were separated from each other in the middle part by a causeway with a bridge, causing the water exchange between the lakes fell by almost a third. Crossing the dam the highway M 15, which runs from Reni by Ismail runs.

Formation

The Jalpuhsee is actually a Pleistocene Liman in the northern Danube Delta and was separated in the Holocene by the deposits of the Danube from the open sea.
