Landgravine Caroline of Hesse-Darmstadt

Caroline of Hesse -Darmstadt ( born March 2, 1746 Buchsweiler; † September 18, 1821 in Bad Homburg, Germany ) was by marriage Countess of Hesse- Homburg.

Life

Karoline was the eldest daughter of Landgrave Ludwig IX. of Hesse- Darmstadt (1719-1790) and his wife Henriette Karoline (1721-1774), daughter of the Count Palatine and Duke Christian III. of Zweibrücken- Birkenfeld.

They married on September 27, 1768 Landgrave Friedrich V of Hesse- Homburg ( 1748-1820 ). The marriage was purely dynastic, diplomatic reasons. Caroline's grandfather, Louis VIII, had led to Frederick V, together with his mother as regent in Hesse- Homburg. The marriage sealed a comparison, had renounced in the Hesse -Darmstadt on the sovereignty over Hessen- Homburg.

Although many children were born in the marriage, the spouses remained alien life. The countess was the now rebuilt small island cottage in pine forest invest in Homburg, which is shown in a painting of the painter Wilhelm Homburg Thiery.
