LaSalle, Quebec

LaSalle is one of 19 arrondissements of the city of Montreal in the Canadian province of Québec. Before 2002 it was a separate municipality. In 2011, the 16.3 km ² large city district counted 74 276 inhabitants.

Geography

LaSalle is located in the southeast of Ile de Montréal, on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. The Pont Honoré - Mercier, a highway bridge that crosses the stream to the mainland. The Lachine Canal forms the northwestern border. Also for the district include uninhabited islands in the middle of the Lachine rapids: the Ile aux Hérons ( Heron Island), Ile aux Chèvres ( Goat Island), the Sept Sœurs ( Seven Sisters ) and the Ile au Diable ( Devil's Island ). Adjacent arrondissements the city of Montreal Lachine are in the northwest, Le Sud -Ouest in the north and Verdun in the Northeast.

History

1676 taught Bishop François de Montmorency -Laval, the parish of Saints- Anges -de- Lachine one, the third oldest on the island. In the village there was a significant Portage, since barges the rapids could not happen and therefore the goods had to be transported overland. This obstacle was removed in 1825 with the opening of the Lachine Canal. In 1848, the village of Lachine split off from the parish. 1855 saw the establishment of self-managed community of Saints- Anges -de- Lachine. This was awarded city status in 1912 and named in LaSalle area, in memory of Robert Cavelier de La Salle, where the lordship had once heard about the field.

At this time the site had around 500 inhabitants. From the mid- 1920s, however, LaSalle became one of the most important industrial centers of the region, which also had a striking increase in population resulted. Major companies who settled here were among other things, a Seagram distillery and a Labatt Brewery.
