In January 2001, Tool announced a putative album with the name Systema Encéphale, the title of which have esoteric and occult names like " Numbereft ", " Encephatalis ", " Musick " and " celiac ". Within a short time the numerous file-sharing features of the files have been inundated with that name. Only a month later declared tool that the new album will be called Lateralus and that Systema Encéphale along with its title bar was just a fake to fool the public and especially the users of file sharing software.

In an interview Keenan responded to the question why the title track of the album " lateralis " instead of " Lateralus " would mean that it would have been a simple typo.

The album was recorded in the "Cello Studios " in Hollywood, as well as in the studios " The Hook ," " Big Empty Space" and "The Lodge " in North Hollywood. Was mixed in the " Larrabee Sound Studios North " in North Hollywood and mastered in the " Gateway Mastering Studios ," Portland. In addition, the CD is encoded with the HDCD process whereby a higher-quality sound to be achieved at appropriate players.
