Lawrence Collins, Baron Collins of Mapesbury

Lawrence Antony Collins, Baron Collins of Mapesbury PC, QC, FBA ( born May 7, 1941) is a British lawyer and was from 2009 to 2011 Judge of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.

Life and career

Collins was born on 7 May 1941 as a son of Sol Collins and Phoebe Barnett. He received at the City of London School His school education. From there he moved to the Downing College, University of Cambridge. There he earned his bachelor's degree and a doctorate then to Doctorate in law. The Magister acquired Collins at Columbia University.

1968 Collins was admitted as a solicitor. From 1971 to 2000 he worked as a partner with the London law firm Herbert Smith and directed from 1995 to 1998, the Department of Procedural Law and Arbitration.

Since 1982, Collins is a visiting professor at Queen Mary University in London. On March 27, 1997, he was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II as Queen's Counsel. He is one of only two practicing lawyers whom this honor. During his work as a lawyer, he negotiated cases before the English Court of Appeal, the House of Lords and the European Court of Justice. He also advised the Chilean government in the extradition proceedings against Augusto Pinochet.

He was 1995-1998 Chairman ( Head ) of the Litigation and Arbitration Department at Herbert Smith. He and Arthur Marriott were the first two practicing solicitors, who were appointed on 27 March 1997 at Queen's Counsel. As a solicitor advocate, he appeared for the English Court of Appeal, the Judicial Committee of the House of Lords and the European Court of Justice.

Activity as a judge

From 1997 to 2000 Collins accompanied the office of a Deputy Judge of the High Court of Justice. On 11 January 2007 the appointment of Collins ' as a judge on the Court of Appeal was announced.

Collins was founded in 1997 as Deputy High Court Judge and was on 28 September 2000 full-time judge in the Chancery Division and left Herbert Smith. He was the first Solicitor, who was appointed directly from his personal activities as a judge of the High Court of England and Wales and the second, who was appointed by Sir Michael Sachs in 1993, which was previously Nerun years Circuit Judge.

In a significant fall of 2006 it came to file sharers, who refused to reach an agreement with the British Phonographic Industry to pay thousands of pounds.

His appointment as Lord Justice of Appeal ( Judge at the Court of apeal ) was announced on 11 January 2007 and a month later he was a member of the Privy Council. On 8 April 2009 it was announced that he, Baron Hoffmann, who was Leonard Hoffmann on April 20, 2009 in retirement, as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary 'll replace. He is the first solicitor who occupied such a high position in the judiciary.

He was editor since 1987 (General Editor ) of Dicey & Morris, one of the standard works on Conflict of laws, which was renamed the 14th edition in 2006 in Dicey, Morris and Collins. Collins is also the author of numerous other books and articles on private international law.

He was Associate Justice ( Bencher ) of the Bar Inner Temple 2001. Since 2004 he is member of the Advisory Committee on Private International Law at the Department for Constitutional Affairs / Ministry of Justice.

Membership in the House of Lords

On 21 April 2009, he was appointed Life Peer and Law Lord. On 28 April 2009 he was officially introduced to the House of Lords. From 2007 to 2009 he was a Lord Justice of Appeal. On 1 October 2009, he and nine other Lords of Appeal in Ordinary Judge of the Supreme Court in the House of Lords he sat first as a Cross Bencher.

From 2009 to the end of his term of office at the Supreme Court on May 7, 2011, he was excluded as a senior judge of votes in the House of Lords.

Family

He married 1983 Sara Shamni, of which he is now divorced. Together they have a son and a daughter.

Honors

Collins was awarded the George Long Prize. In 1963 he was McNair Scholar.

He is a Fellow of Wolfson College since 1975 and in 1994 was a Fellow of the British Academy.

He is a member of the Institut de Droit International. In 2000 he became an honorary member of the Law Society of England and Wales.
