Lawrence Giustiniani

Lorenzo Giustiniani (also Lawrence Justinian ) ( born July 1, 1383 to Venice, † January 8, 1456 ibid ) was a canon, bishop and first Patriarch of Venice. He is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church as a saint.

Life

Lorenzo was a scion of the Venetian family Giustiniani, which has produced significant statesmen, scholars and churchmen. His life was marked by his very religious mother. After the experience of a religious phenomenon, he joined in 1400 in a canon monastery on the lagoon island of San Giorgio in Alga one; together with the Venetian noblemen Antonio Correr and Gabriele Condulmer later Pope Eugene IV; In 1406 he was ordained a priest, and shortly afterwards prior of the monastery. During this time the monastery in a congregation of secular priests were converted, who wanted to live in community. Of his brothers, he was revered for his humility, asceticism and piety, and soon was elected General of the Congregation. He gave the orders new rules and was eager to disseminate these further so that he was soon regarded as the actual founder. After Eugene IV was elected Pope, he appointed Lorenzo as bishop of the Diocese of Castello, which included Venice. Pope Nicholas V in 1451 united the bishopric Castello with the Patriarchate of Grado, the seat was moved to Venice. Thus Giustiniani was the first patriarch of Venice, a position which he held until his death. His term leadership was recognized in secular and ecclesiastical dignitaries; of the population of Venice he was already revered as a saint in his lifetime.

He left letters, sermons and ascetical treatises, which were printed in 1506 in Brescia, in 1524 in Paris and 1560 in Basel.

Worship

On October 16, 1690 he was appointed by Pope Alexander VIII canonized ( the Venetians Piero Ottoboni ). Pope Innocent XII. took him into the calendarium romanum, with September 5, the day of his consecration as bishop, was used as a holiday.

Because of its more local meaning he is no longer to be found today among the saints who are venerated in the Roman Catholic Church throughout the world. His feast day was moved to January 8th anniversary of his death.
