Lechmere is the name of a tram stop of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority ( MBTA ) in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the United States. It is the northern terminus of the branch " E" of the Green Line and has a small depot. The MBTA is planning an expansion to Somerville and Medford, to make a direct connection to the commuter trains Fitchburg Line and Lowell Line. The extension of the line also includes a relocation of the Lechmere station today on the opposite side of the Massachusetts Route 28, whose opening is scheduled for 2017.

History

Leading to the station Lechmere Viaduct was released for use early on 1 June 1912. At this time was located at the position of the station today still no breakpoint, but the tracks led to further tram lines on the Cambridge Street and Bridge Street. Often revealed at the surface due to the lack of intersection freedom delays in the operation, which continued into the underground running in the Tremont Street Subway areas, was so that finally opened the station Lechmere on 10 July in 1922 and named after the adjacent, same department store. However, this was some time ago, replaced by the Cambridge Side Galleria and is now therefore no longer exist. 2010 was a comprehensive renovation.

On February 11, 1983, used until after Lechmere, as the Green Line E was not driveable due to a snow storm at lunchtime and during rush hours shuttle buses from the station from Government Center. This service has been - exactly as planned - maintained even after re-starting the tram and finally set after 14 years on 21 June 1997. In the meantime, another shuttle between Lechmere and Kenmore was used of 28 December 1985 to 25 July 1986.

Track, signaling and safety systems

The station has only one track, the reversable loop and two side platforms is accessible. These are only connected via a tunnel outside the station with one another so that a change of direction is possible only with the purchase of a new ticket.

Building

The bus stop is located at the intersection of Cambridge Street and Massachusetts Route 28 and is completely accessible - but all the cars of the Green Line are not equipped with low floor technology, so that if necessary to wait for a suitable tram.

At the station there is a connection to four bus lines of the MBTA and to the EZRide towards Boston North Station. Addition, there are 347 paid car park and ride parking.
