Leelanau Peninsula AVA

Leelanau Peninsula AVA ( recognized since 30 March 1982) is an American Viticultural Area in the U.S. state of Michigan. The area extends over the entire administrative area of Leelanau County.

The Leelanau County forms a peninsula between Lake Michigan to the west and the Bay Grand Traverse Bay to the east. The generally cold climate of the region is moderated by the water masses. Nevertheless, the danger of frost is latent and during 145 days of the year the thermometer drops below freezing.

The soil is sandy, clayey and loamy deposits of early prehistoric glaciers that rest on a base of limestone and granite.
