Description

Vegetative characteristics

The lens species are mostly annuals, rarely, perennial, herbaceous plants. The stem is erect to decumbent.

The change-constant leaves are usually pinnate paired with two to eight pairs of leaflets. The rachis ending in a grannenartigen tip, or even in a simple tendril; in rare cases, a terminal leaflet present. The inverted - ovate to obovate - lanceolate leaflets have a smooth edge. The stipules are half arrow-shaped to lanceolate.

Generative features

In pendent, long-stemmed, racemose inflorescences are only one to several flowers. The bracts are small and frail and bracts absent.

The for the family relatively small flowers are hermaphrodite, zygomorphic, fünfzählig with double perianth. The five equal calyx teeth are repeatedly longer than the calyx tube. The five petals are white, pale purple to bluish. The flag is nailed obovate. The two nailed and geöhrten wings are fused with the boat. The boat is straight, pointed and often has a slight beak. There are ten stamens present, the uppermost stamen is free and the stamen tube is cut wrong. The almost sedentary ovary contains two ovules. The stylus is dorsiventrally slightly flattened and bears at the top of the inside of a light beard. The scar is small and ovoid.

The short -stalked legume is strongly flattened and contains one or two seeds. The brown seeds are flattened and rounded. The funiculus ( stalk) is expanded in an aril.

Dissemination

The genus Lens has an Old World spread mainly from the Mediterranean to Central Asia. It occurs in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East prior to the Caucasus. It radiates to the Canary Islands, to tropical Africa and to India.

System

The name Lens goes back to the Latin name for the lens. The genus name was first published in 1754 by Lens Philip Miller in The Gardeners Dictionary ... Abridged ..., 4th Edition, Volume 2. A synonym for Lens Mill is Lentilla W.Wight ex D.Fairchild.

The genus belongs to the tribe Lens Fabeae in the subfamily Faboideae within the Fabaceae family. It comprises four or six ways:

  • Lens culinaris Medik. is used as a food lens.
  • Lens ervoides ( Brignoli di Brunhoff ) Grande
  • Lens himalayensis Alef.
  • Lens lamottei Czefr.
  • Lens nigricans Godr.
  • Lens orientalis ( Boiss. ) Schmalh.

All Lens species are diploid with a chromosome complement of 2n = 14

The sister group of the genus Lens is the genus Vicia.
