Leo Aloysius Pursley

Leo Aloysius Pursley ( born March 12, 1902 in Hartford City, Indiana; † 15 November 1998) was Roman Catholic bishop of Fort Wayne - South Bend.

Life

Leo Aloysius Pursley received on 11 June 1927, the sacrament of Holy Orders.

Pope Pius XII. appointed him on 18 July 1950 to the Titular Bishop of Hadrianopolis in Pisidia and Auxiliary Bishop of Fort Wayne. He received his episcopal consecration of the Apostolic Delegate in the United States, Archbishop Giovanni Cicognani Amleto on 19 September of the same year; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Fort Wayne, John Francis Noll, and Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Mary Marling from Kansas City.

On February 21, 1955, he was named by Pope Pius XII. Apostolic Administrator of Fort Wayne. After the death of John Francis Noll, the Pope appointed him on 29 December 1956 to the Bishop of Fort Wayne. The inauguration followed on 26 February of the following year. The Diocese of Fort Wayne was renamed on 28 May 1960 in Diocese of Fort Wayne - South Bend.

Pursley attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as part of a Council Father.

Pope Paul VI. adopted on August 24, 1976 Pursleys to resign.
