History

The Diocese of Fort Wayne - South Bend was posted on January 8, 1857 by Pope Pius IX. out of territory of the Diocese of Vincennes erected as a diocese of Fort Wayne. On 21 October 1944, the Diocese of Fort Wayne was part of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana from. A further transfer of territory on December 10, 1956, founding of the Diocese of Gary. On 28 May 1960, the Diocese of Fort Wayne was renamed Diocese of Fort Wayne - South Bend.
