Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans

Located in the United States Archdiocese of New Orleans (Latin: Archidioecesis novae Aureliae ) is a diocese and Metropolitan seat of the Roman Catholic church located in New Orleans, Louisiana.

History

Precursor of the Archdiocese of New Orleans is the most April 25, 1793 by Pope Pius VI. , founded out of the Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana, Cuba Diocese of Louisiana and the Two Floridas ( Saint Louis of New Orleans). First bishop was the Cubans Luis Ignatius Peñalver y Cárdenas. On July 18, 1826 by Leo XII diocese was. renamed the Diocese of New Orleans. Pope Pius IX. rose on July 19, 1850 the diocese to an archdiocese. First archbishop was the Frenchman Anthony Blanc.

There were numerous territorial concessions from which new bishoprics were founded. Suffragan dioceses are Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Houma - Thibodaux, Lafayette, Lake Charles and Shreveport.

Assigned to the archbishopric is the seminaries Notre Dame and St. Joseph and Xavier University of Louisiana ( xula ), Loyola University New Orleans and Our Lady of Holy Cross College ( OLHCC ).
