John Cody

John Patrick Cardinal Cody ( born December 24, 1907 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, † April 25, 1982 in Chicago, Illinois, USA) was Archbishop of Chicago.

Life

John Cody was born in St. Louis as a child of a family of Irish descent. From the age of twelve, he attended St. Louis Preparatory Seminary. He then studied in Rome at the Pontifical Athenaeum " De Propaganda Fide " and at the Pontifical Athenaeum " Apollinare " Catholic theology and philosophy. In addition, he entered the seminary of the Pontifical North American College and received on December 8, 1931 by Cardinal Francesco Marchetti Selvaggiani the sacrament of Holy Orders.

Already in 1928 he became the Dr. phil. PhD, 1932, Dr. theol. and in 1938 Dr. iur. can. In the period 1932-1938 he was also a lecturer at the Pontifical North American College and also worked for the Vatican Secretariat of State. After his return to the United States from 1938 to 1940 he was secretary of the Archbishop Archbishop of St. Louis, John Joseph Glennon, and at the same time chaplain at St. Mary 's Home for Girls.

Pope Pius XII. appointed him on 24 May 1939 secret Chaplain of His Holiness. On 2 May 1940, he was Cancellarius Curiae of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. On July 14, 1946, Pius XII gave him. the title Prelate of His Holiness house, and appointed him on 14 May 1947 Titular Bishop of Apollonia and auxiliary bishop in Chicago. He received his episcopal consecration Joseph Elmer Ritter on 2 July of the same year in the cathedral of St. Louis; Co-consecrators were the Bishops John Joseph Donnelly and Vincent Stanislaus Waters.

On September 11, 1956, he became Bishop of Kansas City -Saint Joseph, after he was Coadjutor Bishop previously there. On August 14, 1961, he was called by Pope John XXIII. appointed Titular Archbishop of Bosra and Koadjutorerzbischof of New Orleans. On 1 June, he was Apostolic Administrator ibid.; there also Vicar General in the same year. On November 8, 1964, Pope Paul VI appointed him. Archbishop of New Orleans, and shortly thereafter, on June 14, 1965 Archbishop of Chicago. During this time he also took part in the Second Vatican Council.

In the consistory of 26 June 1967 it took Paul VI. as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Cecilia in the College of Cardinals. Cody took part in the August 1978 conclave that elected John Paul I, and the conclave October 1978 from the John Paul II emerged as the Pope.

John Cody died from a heart attack at the age of 74 years and was in Bishop's Mausoleum on Mount Carmel Cemetery ( Hillside ) buried in Chicago.
