Roman Catholic Diocese of Madison

Located in the USA Diocese of Madison (Latin: Dioecesis Madisonensis ) was on 22 December 1945 by Pope Pius XII. built. It was created by the separation of areas of the Dioceses of Milwaukee, Green Bay and La Crosse. It is a suffragan of the ecclesiastical province of Milwaukee.

History

Pope Pius XII. erected the Diocese of 9 January 1946 on the basis of a dated as of December 22, 1945 establishing the decree. It covers 11 counties in southwestern Wisconsin.

In the 19th century the Dominicans Samuel Charles Mazzuchelli in Wisconsin worked, where he founded 25 parishes, 11 of which are in the Diocese of Madison. The priest, the Pope John Paul II in 1993 awarded the heroic virtues of the precursor of the beatification, is buried in Benton within the diocese.

With the founding of the diocese, built 1854-1885 St. Raphael 's Church was raised in Madison to the cathedral. On 14 March 2005 destroyed a large arson fire broken out parts of the cathedral. The tower remained largely undamaged, but from the nave burned completely and the roof collapsed. Instead of rebuilding the Diocese line a new cathedral with a modified floor plan and using the obtained steeple decided at the same location to build. Concrete plans for this are not yet available.
