Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston

The Archdiocese of Galveston - Houston (Latin: Archidioecesis Galvestoniensis Houstoniensis ) is a located in the United States Roman Catholic archdiocese headquartered in Galveston, Texas.

History

The Archdiocese of Galveston - Houston in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI. out of territory of the Diocese of Nueva León Linares o built as Apostolic Prefecture of Texas. On July 10, 1841 Texas Apostolic Prefecture was Gregory XVI. elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Texas was born on May 4, 1847 by Pope Pius IX. raised to the bishopric and renamed Diocese of Galveston. On 19 July 1850, Diocese of Galveston was the Archdiocese of New Orleans is a suffragan. The Diocese of Galveston announced on August 28, 1874 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of San Antonio and the Apostolic Vicariate of Brownsville. A further transfer of territory took place on July 15, 1890 establishing the bishopric of Dallas. On August 3, 1926, the Diocese of Galveston was the Archdiocese of San Antonio is a suffragan. The Diocese of Galveston announced on November 15, 1947 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Austin.

On July 25, 1959, the Diocese of Galveston was renamed the Diocese of Galveston - Houston. The Diocese of Galveston - Houston announced on 25 June 1966 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Beaumont. Other annexations took place on 13 April 1982 founding of the Diocese of Victoria in Texas and on 12 December 1986 on the establishment of the Diocese of Tyler.

On December 29, 2004, the Diocese of Galveston - Houston was elevated by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Cum pacis to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Galveston - Houston, the bishoprics Austin, Beaumont, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Tyler and Victoria were assumed in Texas as suffragan sees.
