DeKalb County (Indiana)

DeKalb County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Auburn.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme northeastern Indiana, bordered in the east by Ohio, is located in the north about 40 miles from Michigan and has an area of 942 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Steuben County, Williams County and Defiance County, Ohio, Allen County, Noble County and LaGrange County.

History

DeKalb County was formed on February 7, 1835 from parts of Allen County and LaGrange County. It was named after Johann de Kalb ( französ. name form de Kalb ), a German - American general during the American Revolution, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Camden in South Carolina.

On 1 May 1837 the county seat was located in the private home of W. Park. 1849, in the County 50 wooden houses and 300 inhabitants, and the first county courthouse was created. On 8 February 1913, burned down and most county records were destroyed.
