Harrison County (Indiana)
Harrison County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Corydon, which was until 1825 the capital of Indiana.
Geography
The County is located in southern Indiana, adjacent to Kentucky and has an area of 1261 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Washington County, Floyd County, Kentucky: Jefferson County, Hardin County and Meade County, Crawford County.
History
Harrison County was formed on October 11, 1808 from parts of Clark County and Knox County. It was named after William Henry Harrison, a general and the first governor of the Indiana Territory.
In the county the Battle of Corydon took place during the Civil War on July 9, 1863.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Harrison County 34 325 people in 12,917 households and 9,713 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.38 percent White, 0.37 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.18 percent from other races groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.96 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,917 households out of which 36.0 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 62.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers and 24.8 percent were non-families. 20.7 percent of all households and 8.4 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.04.
25.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 to 24, 30.2 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 97.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 43,423, and the median income for a family $ 48,542. Males have a median income of $ 33,735, women $ 24,897. The per capita income was $ 19,643. 4.9 percent of families and 6.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
