Howard County (Indiana)

Howard County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Kokomo.

Geography

The County is located in north-central Indiana and has an area of 761 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Miami County, Grant County, Tipton County, Clinton County, Carroll County and Cass County.

History

Howard County was formed on January 15, 1844 from parts of Carroll County, Cass County, Grant County, Hamilton County and Miami County. It was named for Tilghman A. Howard, an American statesman from Indiana.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Howard County 84 964 people in 34,800 households and 23,559 families. The population density was 112 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 89.73 percent White, 6.55 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 1.01 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.85 percent from other races groups; 1.49 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.01 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 34,800 households out of which 31.3 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 52.7 percent were married couples living together, 11.5 percent were single mothers and 32.3 percent were non-families. 28.2 percent of all households and 10.3 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.95 persons.

25.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.3 percent between 18 to 24, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44 years. 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 90 men came.

The median income for a household was $ 43,487, and the median income for a family $ 53,051. Males had a median income of $ 43,767, women $ 26,566. The per capita income was $ 22,049. 6.6 percent of families and 9.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
