Clay County (Indiana)
Clay County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Brazil.
Geography
The County is located in southwestern Indiana, is located in the west about 45 miles from Illinois and has an area of 933 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Parke County, Putnam County, Owen County, Greene County, Sullivan County and Vigo County.
History
Clay County was formed on February 12, 1825 from parts of Owen County, Putnam County, Sullivan County and Vigo County. It was named an American politician, member of the House of Representatives, Senator, Secretary of State and opponents of slavery by Henry Clay.
The first seat of Countyverwaltlung was built in Bowling Green with the first, 1928, the District Court. The construction of the National Road (now U.S. 40 ) and different railway lines moved the city Brazil in first place of accessibility and 1876 the county seat was moved. The old county courthouse burned down and a new one was built in Brazil. The next was built in 1914 and is still in operation today.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Clay County 26,556 people in 10,216 households and 7,437 families. The population density was 29 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.38 percent White, 0.33 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.23 percent from other races groups; 0.68 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.58 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 10,216 households out of which 33.6 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 59.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.4 percent were single mothers and 27.2 percent were non-families. 23.8 percent of all households and 12.3 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.03.
26.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.6 percent between 18 to 24, 27.8 percent between 25 and 44 years. 22.5 percent between 45 and 64, and 15.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 92.1 males.
The median income for a household was $ 36,865, and the median income for a family $ 41,863. Males have a median income of $ 31,611, women $ 21,593. The per capita income was $ 16,364. 6.4 percent of families and 8.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
