Clay County (Indiana)

Clay County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Brazil.

Geography

The County is located in southwestern Indiana, is located in the west about 45 miles from Illinois and has an area of 933 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Parke County, Putnam County, Owen County, Greene County, Sullivan County and Vigo County.

History

Clay County was formed on February 12, 1825 from parts of Owen County, Putnam County, Sullivan County and Vigo County. It was named an American politician, member of the House of Representatives, Senator, Secretary of State and opponents of slavery by Henry Clay.

The first seat of Countyverwaltlung was built in Bowling Green with the first, 1928, the District Court. The construction of the National Road (now U.S. 40 ) and different railway lines moved the city Brazil in first place of accessibility and 1876 the county seat was moved. The old county courthouse burned down and a new one was built in Brazil. The next was built in 1914 and is still in operation today.
