Leone Caetani

Leone Caetani, Duke of Sermoneta and Duke of Teano ( born September 12, 1869 in Rome, † December 25, 1935 in Vancouver ) was an Italian historian in the field of early Islam.

From 1909 to 1913 he was a member of the Camera dei deputati. In 1911, he agreed with the socialists against the attack on Libya, his renewed candidacy in the elections of 1913 was not successful. Following the entry of Italy into World War II in 1915, he served as an artillery officer at the Cadorefront, but was released for health reasons before the end of the war. Opponents of fascism, he ran in 1924 the establishment of the Fondazione Caetani per gli studi musulmani under the auspices of the Accademia dei Lincei, which he joined in 1911 as correspondent and since 1919 as a full member to his library and he collected materials for the long term research to secure. No later than 1927, he left Italy to settle in Canada, where he had purchased an estate in Vernon. Since Caetani had accepted Canadian citizenship, his Italian citizenship was revoked in April 1935, which he also lost his membership in the Academy. After the Zentenarfeiern 1969, the Foundation was awakened as Fondazione Caetani Leone in 1971, again to a new activity.
