Leopold of Styria

Leopold I, also Liutpold, nicknamed the Brave or the Strong ( † October 26, 1129 ), of the tribe of Traungau, a branch of Otakare, Margrave of Styria was from 1122 to 1129.

Leopold was the son of Ottokar ( Otakar ) II and Elizabeth of Austria, daughter of Margrave Leopold II. He was since 1123 or 24 married to the Welfin Sophie of Bavaria ( † 1145 ), daughter of Henry the Black, sister of the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.

He got his nickname from the church for the support of the Archbishops of Salzburg against Emperor Henry V in the Investiture Controversy.

The main heritage by Henry III. , The last Eppensteiner and cousin of his father, he inherited from that in 1122 its rich Allode, the provincia Graslupp, that's the whole Neumarkt and Sankt Lambrecht area, and the Murau region that until then to Carinthia (county Friesach) had heard, and then fell to the expectant Styria, the Mur until Leoben and south of Bruck to Gösting, the Muerztal with the Mariazellerland and the whole district Voitsberg. This heritage initiated the expansion of the country's sovereignty.

Leopold built with Hartberg the first Traungau -Palatinate and its first store in the marrow. Another of his palaces was in gray Scharnhorst / Pürgg. He was also governor of the monastery of St. Lambrecht. He operated the establishment of Austria's oldest Cistercian monastery in Rein ( near Graz ) in 1129 and was co-founder in 1123 of the Benedictine monastery Gleink.

Since his son Ottokar was at death only 4 years old, Sophie Styria reigned for many years.

In September 2006, his grave was in rehabilitation work in the Chapter House of the pen clean, next to the graves of other spiritual and secular ruler, discovered.
