Leroy Hood

Leroy Edward Hood ( born October 10, 1938 in Missoula, Montana) is an American physician and biologist.

His services are in particular his work on the automation of DNA sequencing (see automatic sequencing ) and the diversity of possible antibodies of an individual by recombination of genetic information (see V ( D) J recombination).

Life

Hood earned in 1960 at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech ) in Pasadena, California, a bachelor's in biology. In 1964 he completed his studies in medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, with the MD from. 1968 acquired Hood at the California Institute of Technology, a Ph.D. in biochemistry.

1975 Hood was appointed professor of biology at Caltech, in 1980, he took over the management of the local Department of Biology and 1981 in addition to the local Cancer Center ( Cancer Center ). 1989 Hood Director of the NSF Science and Technology Center for Molecular Biotechnology of the National Science Foundation ( NSF), which is operated jointly by Caltech and the University of Washington.
