LeRoy Samse

LeRoy Perry Samse ( born June 15, 1885 † 1 May 1956 Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles) was an American athlete who was successful as a pole vaulter at the beginning of the 20th century. He jumped a world record and won an Olympic silver medal.

For pole vault final of the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis occurred in six Americans and the German Paul Weinstein. Olympic champion Charles Dvorak with the Olympic record of 3.50 m. Four other Americans finished the contest with skipped 3.35 m, where LeRoy Samse was awarded 2nd place of failed attempts due to the lowest number.

In the following two years Samse jumped four world records:

  • Free air: 3.74 m and 3.78 m on June 2, 1906 in Evanston
  • 3.44 m on March 11, 1905 in Milwaukee
  • 3.49 m on January 22, 1906 in Cincinnati

In 1906, he won the U.S. Championship with 3,48 m.
