Les Baux de Provence AOC

Right | The Alpilles with environment The wine region of Les Baux -de- Provence is located in the northwest of the French wine-growing region of Provence. The appellation overlaps here with the larger Coteaux d' Aix -en- Provence, under whose name the wines were produced on 20 April 1995 before classification for Appellation d' Origine. You can see the red and rosé due to stricter rules, in a sense, as a Grand Cru wine-growing region of Provence plants look even if they officially do not have this classification. White wines are not admitted.

The vineyards are located south of the city of Avignon on either side of the small hills of the Alpilles and comprise 305 hectares (as of 2005 ) in the six municipalities of Les Baux -de- Provence, Fontvieille, Maussane -les -Alpilles, Mouriès, Paradou, Saint- Etienne -du- Grès and Saint- Remy- de -Provence in the Bouches -du -Rhône.

In general, subject to the harvest of a quantitative limit of max. 50 hectoliters / hectare.

The red wine consists of at least two of the main varietals Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah. The combined share of the main grape varieties must not be below 60 % and no variety may make up more than 90 % of the wine. The proportion of secondary Cinsault, Counoise and Carignan must not exceed 30 % and the proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon is max. 20%. The vine Carignan is not replanted since 1995, so that their share is significantly reduced. The minimum alcohol content is 11.5 % by volume.

The rosé is made of at least two of the main Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah. The combined share of the main grape varieties must not be below 60 % and no variety may make up more than 90 % of the wine. The proportion of sub- varieties Counoise, Carignan and Mourvedre must not exceed 30 % and the proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon is max. 10%. The minimum alcohol content is 11.5 % by volume
