Levice

Levice ( German Levice, older and also Lebentz Levencz, Hungarian Léva ) is a city in western Slovakia and gives the district with the same name.

Location

The city is located in the open hilly terrain of the northern Danube lowlands and is an economic hub of the region.

History

The village was mentioned in 1156 as Leua for the first time in writing, and was from 1321 to 1580 the seat of the administration of the county perch.

Until 1918, the town belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. By the First Vienna Award they came from 1938 to 1945 for a short time again to Hungary.

Population

According to the 2001 census, 84.83 % of inhabitants were Slovaks. Next were counted 12.23 % Hungarians, 1.04 % Czechs and 0.36 % Roma. After confession the most widespread, the Roman Catholic Church was with 58.76 %, 22.77 % referred to himself as an atheist, 7.46% were Protestant, 0.32 % Greek Catholic un 3,4 % of the population did not respond.

The urban area is divided into 9 Katastralgemeinden ( Čankov, Gena, Horsa, Kalinčiakovo, Krížny Vrch, Ladislavov Dvor, Levice, Maly Kiar, Nixbrod ) divided, the city itself consists of 4 districts Čankov (1986 incorporated ) Horsa (1986 incorporated ) Kalinčiakovo (1976 amalgamated ) and Maly Kiar (1976 amalgamated ).
